
Anoka-Hennepin School District 11 serves all or parts of Andover, Anoka, Blaine, Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Burns Township, Champlin, Coon Rapids, Dayton, Fridley, Ham Lake, Oak Grove and Ramsey.
The district enrolls approximately 41,500 students, grades preK through 12, in two kindergarten centers, 28 elementary schools, seven middle schools(6-8), five high schools, plus alternative middle and high schools sites. The district also operates two programs that are open to students from throughout the district. Riverview Specialty School for Math and Environmental Science in Brooklyn Park and the Secondary Technical Education Program (STEP), for high school juniors and seniors at the Anoka Technical College.
Anoka-Hennepin is a leader in the use of technology to enhance classroom instruction. All Anoka-Hennepin schools have computer labs and each classroom is equipped with a computer and large screen monitor connected to Internet. Students may use the classroom technology to access the Internet for research and communication purposes. Schools also have computer labs.
The district considers its strengths to be an emphasis on basic skills with a wide variety of electives. The elementary program features a strong reading-language arts program which includes instruction in phonics and an integrated math and science program that emphasizes "hands on" learning.
Specialists teach elementary music, art and physical education. Writing is emphasized at all grade levels. Middle schools stress fundamental skills in a student-centered environment. High schools offer numerous electives and core courses to meet varying interests and abilities.
The school district offers a complete range of programs and services for students who have disabilities. Specially trained teachers, therapists, clinicians, and psychologists are available to work with students who have special needs.
All elementary schools offer three types of Talent Development Activities, such as Artist-In Residence Days and Arts and Academic Fairs for all students:opportunities such as Challenge Math and Junior Great Books for students with demonstrated talents and interests. Middle schools offer accelerated courses in reading and math for students needing more challenge, and high schools offer a wide variety of courses that include Honors Courses, Advanced Placement, and College in the Schools. Anoka-Hennepin has strong participation in academic competitions such as Destination Imagination, State Science Fair, Math League and MathCounts.
Children learn better and achieve at higher levels when their parents are actively involved in their education. For this reason, the district strives to support a partnership between school and families. By building learning into everyday family life, communicating with the school, attending performances, volunteering, and participating in parent groups and school committees, parents make the difference in students' learning.
The Anoka-Hennepin Community Education Program the largest in Minnesota demonstrates that learning is a lifelong experience. The department offers opportunities for all ages, infant through senior citizen.
It also offers a school age child care program serving all elementary schools, as well as basic education programs for adults.
FREE transportation is provided for students living two miles or more from school. Transportation is available for a fee for students living between one and two miles from school.
The school district is governed by an elected board of six members. The board meets regularly on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. Most meetings are held at the Educational Service Center, 11299 Hanson Blvd., Coon Rapids.
