City of Dayton
The City of Dayton is located in the northwest corner of Hennepin County with a small portion of Dayton on the very eastern side of Wright County. Dayton is a progressive community with an estimated population just over 5,000. Dayton has the Mississippi River on the north boundary and the Crow River on the west boundary.
The City of Dayton has a range of community services and facilities to serve its residents including, Fire, Police, and Public Works departments and schools.
City Hall. City Hall is located on South Diamond Lake Road and provides offices for the City and meeting space for the City Commissions and Council.
Public Works. The Public Works facility is located at the intersection of South Diamond Lake Road and Zanzibar Lane. The Public Works Department is responsible for the snow removal, street repair, park maintenance, and building maintenance.
Police Department. The Dayton Police Department is a full service department operating out of City Hall. The department has a Chief, four full-time officers, and one full-time secretary. The department also has a police reserve program with volunteer members available to assist the Dayton Police Department.
Fire Department. Dayton has a volunteer fire department with two stations and 30 volunteers. Fire Stations are located in the Historic Village area, connected to the Dayton Senior Center, and the second station is in the northeast section of the city connected to Dayton City Hall.
Dayton Senior Center. The Dayton Senior Center is located in the Historic Village and provides meeting and activity space for active seniors in the community as well as community wide meetings. The Center is an area focal point serving meals there on Tuesdays and Thursday. It is a wonderful place to meet for lunch and enjoy a game of cards, or bingo.
Schools. Dayton Elementary School is part of Anoka-Hennepin School District #11 for students from grade one through grade five. Dayton Elementary School is located on South Diamond Lake Road east of Pineview Lane adjacent to City Hall. Dayton is also part of the Elk River School District #728 and the Osseo School District #279.
Dayton Businesses: Dayton has attracted a number of business to our commercial and industrial areas, located along the junction of county highways #81 and #101. We are proud of our businesses and are committed to continue to attract economically and environmentally sound commercial development.
Recreation and Parks: Dayton has four golf course within the city; French Lake Golf, Daytona Country Club Golf, Hayden Hills Golf, and Sundance Golf and Bowl. Dayton has over 4,100 acres dedicated for public park use, including the 20 acre Central Park located on So. Diamond Lake Road. Over 4,000 park acres are in the Elm Creek Regional Park. This is the largest regional park within the Hennepin County's Three Rivers Park District. Elm Creek Park provides the City with hiking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, biking, and snowmobile trails, a nature center, playground, picnic area and swimming pond.
Governing Body: The City of Dayton is governed by a council consisting of a mayor and four council members. The City Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesday each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Dayton City Hall. The City has three advisory commissions to assist the Council in the decision- making progress. The Commissions, Park, Planning, and Public Safety, meet once per month and consist of residents of Dayton.
Dayton is blessed with rolling hills, green pastures, and beautiful vistas overlooking the Mississippi and Crow Rivers. A total of 10 lakes can be found within Dayton's 30 square miles. We are a city of beautiful farms, and careful development.
"Dayton Communicator" is the City's newsletter. It is published four times per year. Community Activities include the annual Dayton Clean-up Day (the first Saturday in May), and Dayton Heritage Day (the third weekend in August). Heritage Day celebrates the founding of our wonderful city and includes a parade, pie and ice cream social, street dance, and lunch served by the Dayton Seniors.
City Hall, Fire Station #2, and Police Department is located at 12260 So. Diamond Lake Road. Dayton Senior Center and Fire Station #1 is located at 18461 Dayton Street.
