City of Andover

The City of Andover is an exciting place to live and do business. Residents enjoy the scenic rural atmosphere of this growing suburb with a population exceeding 31,000.  Once a well kept secret of Anoka County, Andover is an affluent residential community, with abundant parks, trails and recreational areas.  As a relatively young community, businesses have room to expand with their pick of a highly skilled and educated work force.

In addition to the many natural and local amenities, Andover is located 20 miles north of Minneapolis where a cosmopolitan mix of activities such as shopping, major universities, national athletic competitions, theater, arts and entertainment exist.  Commercial activities have increased with the construction of a number of new businesses through out the City.

The City is working with developers to complete a new mixed use development known as "Andover Station North" located on the north side of Bunker Lake Blvd. just west of Hanson Blvd.  This exciting new development includes residential, commercial, office,  light industrial land uses and a ball field complex.  Site development inquiries for this new area should be directed to Community Development offices at 763-767-5140.

Andover City Center Complex is located at 1685 Crosstown Blvd. NW at Hanson Blvd. NW and is home to the City offices, Public Works, Senior Center and the new Community Center/YMCA.  Andover is served by a full time Police Dept. through a contract with the Anoka County Sheriff's Dept.  A professional volunteer Fire Dept. also serves this community from three strategically located Fire Stations.  The city complex sports over 40 acres of play fields and playground equipment and serves as a central congregation point for many community activities including the annual Andover Family Fun Fest in July.

Andover is part of two school districts.  St. Francis School District #15 covers the northern section of the City. Most Andover students attend Anoka-Hennepin School District #11 which serves the southern part of the city.  Crooked Lake Elementary, Andover Elementary, Rum River Elementary, Oak View Middle and Andover High School are located  in District #11.  There are two private schools located in the City.  The City has more than 400 acres of community and neighborhood parks. Kelsey Round Lake Park is a 136 acre nature area for hiking, biking, skiing and environmental observation.  Other recreational facilities include more than 400 acres of the Anoka County/Bunker Hills Regional Park which is home to the Bunker Hills Wave Pool, hiking and biking trails, cross country skiing, camping and other outdoor activities.  The Rum River Central Regional Park is located north of Andover on County Road #7.

The Governing City Council body consists of five members led by a Mayor. Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Residents may address the Council at any regular scheduled meeting.  The Council appoints members to several Commissions that provide recommendations and information to the City Council on a variety of issues.  The City's website  www.ci.andover.mn.us has additional information residents can access.

There are two stories about how Andover got its name.  The popular story involves a train wreck.  When the train de-railed it was said to have rolled over "And over".  The other story is about an Englishman who settled in the area around 1857.  He apparently named the train station after his home town.  The train station was located  in the area that was named Grow Township in 1860, and then named  "Andover Village".  In 1974 the City was incorporated and named the City of Andover.

"The City of Andover, its residents and businesses invite you to become part of the many positive aspects of life in Andover".
